Meme and Estate Stuff

Well, I've been tagged, but I've already done the Random Things meme, and if you'd like to read it, go here and read it. :-)

I'd love to request some prayerful or similar energy from y'all. It's all good, though. The good news is, we got an offer on the house in the estate—the last remaining lot standing between me and freedom from the deathmare.

The not-as-good news is that it is ridiculously, insultingly low, and came with a list of justifications as to why the offer was low—most of which in everyone's opinion had no bearing on lowering the price because they were things that the future buyer could choose to do (such as relocate the driveway to make it a safer entrance or move the water tap-in) and not things that must be done.

Especially since the property is listed As Is with the assumption that given the condition of the house, the buyer has two options—tear it down and build new, or put in significant effort to do a complete restoration of the existing home. Both of these options will cost about the same amount of money to execute (actually, building new, depending on the size of the home, could cost considerably more than restoration). Both of these options increase profitability of the future sale of the restored or rebuilt home (meaning, whomever does this will likely make a killing if they sell when the market tops out in a few years).

Basically, we're aware of what it needs, and we have our reasons for setting the price where it is. It's actually been lowered by almost $40,000 since the fire happened. It's not about the house, it's about the quality of the setting, the lot and land itself, the existence of other fully functional outbuildings, the neighborhood, and so on. All of these factors justify the asking price.

If it was the house alone, yes, I could see how it might command a lower price. But it is not the HOUSE being bought, as in, "a move-in ready house", and that is clear in how it is listed. The house is not the primary focus of the listing.

But it's up to the buyer to decide if the raw materials suit their vision or not. You want it, buy it; you don't, that's fine. Just don't whine to us and expect us to lower our price drastically because what we have to offer doesn't suit you.

We countered on principle with a price about 10% lower than the asking price, just to make our point, and backed it up with OUR justifications. Yes, we intend to sell it, but let's be reasonable.

So I'd like to ask that you throw some positive energy our way towards having a miracle occur. Either have this buyer have an epiphany and agree to our counter or close to it; or conjure us up another buyer who sees the real value of the property, now and future, and is willing and able to reach an agreeable sum with us. Pronto, OK?

I have been "seeing" this closing occuring right after Christmas since before the offer came in. Help us make it so. You know what to do, I've coached you well. :-)

Thanks in advance.

Ten Random Things Meme

Snagged this meme from Gotta Knit... you know the drill. Do if you feel like it.

1. Magazines subscribed to:
Parelli Savvy Times is about it, now that I've let everything else lapse due to budget considerations. Before, I'd subbed to Handwoven, Spin-Off, IK Knits, and Cast-Off (TGKA).

2. Aside from knitting, my favorite pastimes are:
Reading/writing but no rithmetic if I can help it; philosophy, design, music, fibers, cats, horses, sewing, movies, blogging...

3. If I were not an unemployed person (insert your own profession), I would be:
Actively participating in legal enslavement.

Oh. Uh, well? I've tried being a rock star and a graphic artist; I'd say horse trainer, cowgirl, philosophy professor, and/or bestselling author works for me.

No wait—just make that MULTIMILLION-DOLLAR LOTTERY JACKPOT WINNER. Yup. There ya go.

4. I am irrationally worried about:
Someone diagnosing me as certifiable and taking away all my rights.

5. If I were the opposite sex:
I'd love being able to "let loose" whenever and wherever the mood strikes me, write my name in the snow, and being able to take off my shirt in the summer heat. Other than that, I'd rather be female because despite civilization's attempts to instate gender equality, there is still a good faction that believes the man brings home the bacon and personally, if I could get a job being the stay-at-home wife, I'd do it. No bacon for me.

6. The thing I miss most about childhood is:
My parents being alive and healthy and able to run things so I could just play.

7. I like to collect:
Yarn, guitars, books, cowboy boots, scarves, bells.

8. Though I’ve never been there, I feel inexplicably homesick for:
Austin, Texas. When I can, I plan to visit to find out why.

9. I’ve never really liked to eat:
Fish, organs or leaves. That about sums it up.

10. When I have nightmares, they’re usually about:
Having all of my stuff stolen and being unable to do anything about it.

Have You Ever... (A Meme)

It's going around... feel free to borrow for your own blog...

1. Gone on a blind date?
Yes, a couple. They didn’t go well. One of them was a blind and double date with the friends who set us up. They were mortified when my date proceeded to drink his dinner (whiskey, on the rocks), eat nothing, and become rude and belligerent. He then got into a heated philosophical debate with me and we were definitely on opposing sides. My friend picked up the tab on my meal as an apology and we never spoke of it again.

2. Skipped school?
Yup. Senior year was insane for me. I’m surprised I graduated, to be honest (brains aside). One time I was granted the privilege of taking the car to school. My friend and I bailed early in the morning and drove to a neighboring little town’s high school about 30 miles away to pick up her “long distance” boyfriend and another friend (for me, another blind date), and of course nobody thought to check the fuel tank, so… how embarrassing to run out of gas on the way home when we were so close to getting off scott-free. Karma, baby. ☺

3. Been on the opposite side of your country?
Yes. Lived on the opposite side of my country for a little over a year. Been to both sides of it. Hmm. Actually, I’ve been to all four sides and crossed all the borders except the Western one! (Into Mexico, into Canada, over the Atlantic to England… I guess Hawaii must be next.)

4. Swam in an ocean?
Yes. Swam in the Atlantic off the coast of Florida. Stuck toes in the Pacific when I lived in California. If swimming in the Gulf of California when we visited my Uncle in Puerto Peñasco, Mexico counts as swimming in the Pacific, then I guess I’ve done that, too.

5. Had your booze taken away by the cops?
No.

6. Lettered in a high school sport?
As if! I was a band geek.

7. Cried yourself to sleep?
Yes, especially in 2006 and 2007. I think I cried myself to sleep every night for a year after my Mother died. And every morning. The day I didn’t was the day I knew I was on the road to recovery.

8. Played a musical instrument?
Let’s see… guitar (acoustic and electric), bass, bassoon, clarinet, tenor sax, french horn and vocals. I’d say yes.

9. Sung karaoke?
Yes. But every time I do, I feel like I have an unfair advantage since I’ve also sung professionally with bands and had lessons.

10. Cheated on an exam?
No. But I’ve had others try to cheat off of me.

11. Played spin-the-bottle?
Sure.

12. Laughed until some sort of beverage came out of your nose?
Yes. Let me say for the record that Coke hurts something fierce, and milk, though you’d think it would be silky smooth, hurts as well. Let me ask THIS: have you ever burped and farted simultaneously? Or laughed so hard that you did that?

13. Watched the sun rise with someone you care about?
Sure!

14. Ever been arrested?
Um, yeah. I was a kid. (As if that excuses it!) OK, also once as an adult but a young stupid one who learned her lesson (reckless op! naughty girl!).

15. Gone ice skating?
This is interesting? OK… sure. I have. Took a few lessons even. Can do a salchow. Or could, when I was 10. Nowadays if I go ice skating it’s not on purpose…

16. Been skinny dipping?
Sure, lots of times. Again. In my youth.

17. Been on television?
Yes, more than once. First time, I was maybe 7? Got onto some Public TV kids’ show as the entertainment. Played Beethoven's "Für Elise" on guitar. It was going smoothly until I looked up, saw the camera, and realized halfway through that I was on TV. I froze like a deer in headlights, and completely blanked out on the place where it changes from the main “deedledeedledeedledeedle deee dah daah” part to the “dah dah dah DAHHHH… duh DAH dah daaaahhh” bridge and just sat there in stunned fumbling silence until something kicked in and I finished the song.

My Mom said I only hesitated, but in my head, I’d stopped for five minutes. That moment has haunted me forever. I’ve always been kind of relieved at the end of an evening when I’ve gotten through the entire set without forgetting a word or musical passage. Must be why I have a mental block about auditioning on bass or guitar, but seem to have no fear when it's a vocal audition.

Then I was on TV when the News came out to the mall to film our band playing. Our band had come up with the Crossover Coalition, a “movement” designed to bring unity among local bands to promote cooperative bookings and the mall concert was a promotion for that (our band and the other Coalition members). In our town, bands competed rudely for gigs. We thought if we worked together to book them, trading off who got to headline versus who opened, it would foster cooperation versus competition and make it better for all of us. My appearance on TV was a brief shot of me and the band. You could hear me singing, and the newscaster commented to the other reporters “She looks like Edie Brickell!” (He was smitten. LOL!)

18. Thrown up in front of a date?
LOL! Yup. Didn’t realize I had, until I came to. It was Halloween weekend, 1982. My college beau took me home for the weekend to party with his friends, BIG party. They liked to drink Jack & Coke. I was foolish enough to think I could keep up with them. I got rip-snorting drunk. We got back to his parents' place after the party and apparently somewhere along the way I’d blacked out… I came to, hovering over the toilet. My beau was trying to clean it up.

I’d missed. I got both of us. Blatantly. I have to give the guy credit though—it must’ve been love, because he took it like a man, and he even did my laundry, though I never quite got over the fact that he washed my favorite black jeans in hot water. They went in a size 11 and came out a size 7. Sigh.

Those days are long ago and far away. Nowadays, I'm lucky if I can swig down three Coronas before I have to go take a nap.

Song Title Meme and Blather

I know, I'm meme-happy lately. All I've been doing is riding my horse and playing with him, and trying to convince my mare that I'm really still her friend (she's decided to be elusive again). Unless you are as horse-crazy as I am, my escapades aren't all that interesting. And they aren't related to knitting.

But it's going well. Now that we've broken the cantering fear issue, we're cantering all over the place, and yesterday, I found I can break into a canter from a dead stop, rather than work up to it from the trot. Working up to it is actually harder than I thought! I had it in my mind that it was like changing gears—walk is first gear, trot is second, canter third, gallop fourth. Nope! It's like going from smooth four-beat walk to bouncy two-beat trot to smooth three-beat rocking horse. MUCH easier to just smooch and canter off into the sunset.

In other news, Jupiter finally went direct after several months of retrograde, which is GREAT news for anything that has been stalled out because Jupiter is the planet of expansion and growth, so the stagnation should lift now. I fully expect to be hearing from my realtors this week about house sales. I checked back, and the timing of the slow-downs and fall-throughs coincided with Jupiter going retrograde. HMMMmmmmm. There is another planet that was off-kilter for two years and just changed direction, too.

I'm tellin' ya, this is the week. On to the memes. Do it if you wanna, consider yourself tagged.
  • Choose a singer/band/group
  • Answer using ONLY titles of songs by that singer/band/group
  • Tag 7 more people. Or not.
I choose: Journey

1. Are you male or female? Walks Like A Lady
2. Describe yourself. Happy To Give
3. What do people feel when they’re around you? Don't Stop Believin'
4. How would you describe your previous relationship? Separate Ways
5. Describe your current relationship. When You're Alone (It Ain't Easy)
6. Where would you want to be now? Still They Ride*
7. How do you feel about love? Faithfully
8. What’s your life like? Sweet & Simple
9. What would you ask for if you had only one wish? Change for the Better
10. Say something wise. Be Good To Yourself

*Well, I had to work in some sort of horse reference and this was the closest thing.

Quizzically Speaking

Your result for The Best Thing About You Test...

Humility

Humility is your strongest virtue. You are humble.

Humility is the defining characteristic of an unpretentious and modest person, someone who does not think that he or she is better or more important than others. And you? When you do the right thing, you're doing it for all the right reasons. All 7 virtues are a part of you, but your humility runs deepest.

It is likely you're a quiet type. But if not, then you just have dark, secret side that loves to give.

Humble famous people: JD Salinger, Isaac Newton, Harry Potter (pre-puberty)

Your raw relative scores follow. 0% is low, and 100% is perfect, nearly impossible. Note that I pitted the virtues against each other, so in some way these are relative scores. It's impossible to score high on all of them, and a low score on one is just relatively low compared to the other virtues.

YOUR VIRTUES

50% Compassion

22% Intelligence

63% Humility

44% Honesty

38% Discipline

43% Courage

42% Passion

Fascinating. I'm also surprised that the photo is of someone with a horse. Hmm.

You Are Fettuccine Alfredo

Compared to most people, you have rich and decadent tastes.
If you can afford something, you'll go ahead and indulge yourself.
You are a true foodie. No food is off the table for you.
You're the type most likely to appreciate every aspect of a five star meal.

What Pasta Dish Are You?

Suddenly, I'm very hungry.

I wish my horse could take this next test. Interestingly enough, when I first started work at my old job, my manager had us all take a test to find out if we were Right- or Left-Brained. I'm glad to see that the results haven't changed.

Your result for The Right Brain vs Left Brain Test...

Center Brained!

Much like Goldilocks, you have gone the middle way.

Slightly less typical, you could consider yourself center-brained. Center-brained people are neither left nor right dominant, but rather exhibit equal qualities of both. If you are center-brained, you are likely both logical and creative, excel in the maths and sciences, and also art and philosophy.

As my former manager called it, "Whole Brain Goodness!" Pat Parelli would call that an Extreme Middle-of-the-Roadist. Speaking of Parelli...

I found my trailer ride, and Cheerios and I are on our way to the second clinic of the season in October! And we cantered yesterday! Big breakthrough. Huge. Psyched!

And to think, I took French 101 and 102 and aced both... c'est pathetique, non? ;-)

Your result for The Let's Parler French Test...

78% LikelyToSurvive!

You scored 78% Likely To Survive in a French-speaking country.

Obviously, you get some negative points if you say 'sh*t' instead of thank you, or 'eff off' instead of sorry!

No insects (on purpose—I can't help it if they fly into my mouth before I swallow). Nothing made from hooves and hides (lox). Nothing containing lips and @$$holes (hot dogs). And the snake thing? Uh... crocs, snakes, lizards... maybe I should update it to No Lizards, Gizzards, Fish or Leaves.

My sister. It was REALLY volatile, and the first real argument we've ever had (which explains a lot about our relationship—or lack thereof—over the past 45 years).

2. What is your weapon of choice?

Words.

3. Would you hit a member of the opposite sex?

Only if he hit me first and it was in self-defense.

4. How about of the same sex?

See #3.

5. Who was the last person who got really angry at you?

See #1.

6. What is your pet peeve?

People who are completely out of touch with Consciousness, who only see things from a grounded earth-based POV, and who absolutely cannot allow themselves to see the other person's side of things.

7. Do you keep grudges, or can you let them go easily?

I used to keep them, but I've been learning to let them go.

SLOTH

1. What is one thing you’re supposed to do daily that you don’t?

Brush my teeth.

2. What is the latest you’ve ever woken up?

Uh, I was a traveling rock musician in the 80s. Do you really want to know? Fine. 6:00 PM.

3. Who have you been meaning to contact, but haven’t?

The barn manager.

4. What is the last lame excuse you made?

Aren't they all lame?

5. Have you ever watched an infomercial all the way through?

Yes. Then I ordered the product. I own the Magic Bullet Blender. AND I LOVE IT. It makes killer smoothies in like 10 seconds. ZZZZZRRRRRPPPP!!!! Done. Worth every penny.

6. When was the last time you got in a good workout?

Um... at the gym? Last fall. But loading and unloading an entire 10x12 storage unit, including the loading of a washer, dryer, stove, and rolltop desk onto, then off of, a pickup truck SHOULD count for something.

7. How many times did you hit the snooze button on your alarm clock today?

None. :-)
.
.
.
OK. Fine. I'll own up. I don't turn the alarm clock ON. I just wake up when I wake up. Ah, the benefits of being liberated from the work force.

GLUTTONY

1. What is your overpriced yuppie beverage of choice?

Chai!

2. Meat eaters: white meat or dark meat??

White and only if it's chunked up really good first. (Cannot dissect my food!)

3. What is the greatest amount of alcohol you’ve had in one sitting/outing/event?

Ulllgggh. Uhhh... either the time I tried to keep up with my alcoholic guitarist (1997) and drank 9 beers in one night (hungover like you would not believe, thought I was gonna die and oh btw he won) or the time I drank an entire bottle of NightTrain wine (1986, maybe?), not realizing when my friend and I would go through two bottles, though we split it, I didn't drink an entire bottle myself (guys can hold more)...

Yeah, I don't drink like that anymore. Notice both occurred before the year 2000. I'm lucky if I can manage three beers in one night nowadays (and still be awake).

4. Have you ever used a professional diet company?

A what?

5. Do you have an issue with your weight?

Not really. It's there, but I don't have an issue with it.

6. Do you prefer sweets, salty foods, or spicy?

Spicy. I'm not that big on sweet or salty. Though I love chocolate, I don't like SWEET chocolate. Nor do I like bitter. I like... semi-sweet. Or sweet with salt (nuts).

7. Have you ever looked at a small house pet or child and thought “lunch”?

What? Uh, no?

LUST

1. How many people have you seen naked (not counting movies/family)?

I'm sorry. I've lost count.

2. How many people have seen YOU naked (not counting physicians/family)?

I'm sorry. I've lost count.

3. Have you ever caught yourself staring at the chest/crotch of a member of the opposite gender during a normal conversation?

Oh my gosh this is an embarrassing meme.

4. Have you ever kissed two people in one night?

*blushing* Yes... IT WAS THE 80s. I WAS IN A BAND. WE DID THAT. I don't do that anymore.

5. What is your favorite body part on a person of your gender of choice?

Eyes. Boring, huh?

6. Have you ever been propositioned by a prostitute?

Not that I'm awa—oh, wait, yes, I was, but it was a funny story. I'm in L.A. My friend and I are getting out of my car in front of Ricki Rachtman's CatHouse (major club at the time) for a night of rock n roll fun. This... er... individual approaches us and tries to interest us in partaking of, er, it. It was a young white male—in drag. In a miniskirt. And I think he batted for the other team. But he said we ladies were so fine he was willing to make an exception. He was flip and sweet about it. We just laughed, said no thank you, and complimented him on his outfit. Does that count?

7. Is love at first sight really lust?

Depends. Did they wind up married, or just make the most of the moment? If the former, it's not. If the latter, it's lust.

GREED

1. How many credit cards do you own?

I don't own them, the banks/companies own them. (I know. I'm in one of those moods today.) OK. I'll play nice. I no longer use them. I have one outstanding card, and that's Home Depot, and it's a smallish amount, and the only reason I used it was to buy the plumbing fixtures for the house I'm trying to sell, figuring it can get paid from the proceeds of the sale, thus not coming out of my survival money. Plus it had 12 months no interest no payments. It's due in January 2009. I'll probably pay it off this month because I'm tired of looking at it. But I live on a cash-only basis now and this world tries to make that very difficult, doesn't it?

2. What’s your guilty pleasure store?

Any music store or book store (Amazon). (Nope. Not the yarn store anymore. I am oversaturated with yarn.)

3. If you had $1 million, what would you do with it?

Tithe first, then INVEST IT. Or most of it. Make it grow.

4. Would you rather be rich, or famous?

RICH. Because you can't pay bills with famous.

5. Would you accept a boring job if it meant you would make megabucks?

Nope. Tried that already. There are not enough anti-depressants in the world to assuage the depression that came as a result. Boring megabucks jobs are not worth feeling suicidal every day.

6. Have you ever stolen anything?

Oh, geez. When I was a minor, I shoplifted a bit like most kids—see what we could get away with. The biggest thing I took was a skirt and blazer in my big purse. I never wore it, I felt too guilty. I think my Mom eventually found it and took it back. Of course, when my friend and I got caught at Rink's Bargain City (in the 70s) with lipstick we hadn't paid for... I realized there were consequences and that was the end of my life of crime. Unless you count stealing parking spaces from someone by zipping in before they can get there... I try to live above the law. But I have my own laws about some things.

7. How many MP3s are on your hard drive?

Probably over 1,000 (after checking iTunes) but about half of them are MP3d from my personal collection or purchased music (or my own stuff), and the other half are free podcasts.

PRIDE

1. What’s one thing you have done that you’re most proud of?

Getting my PNH Level 1 with Wildflower in 2002, getting past my fears and taking Cheerios to a PNH clinic this year.

2. What one thing have you done that your parents are most proud of?

Gotten my college degree. That was like the ONE THING they really wanted me to do.

3. What things would you like to accomplish in your life?

Get my PNH Levels 2 and 3, finish all three of the TKGA Handknitter levels, finish and distribute at least 5 CDs of my own music and sell them (five albums, dude!), write a book, get married, win the lottery, travel, live to be 95.

4. Do you get annoyed by coming in second place?

Depends on who or what I come in second place TO. If the winner far exceeds or slightly edges out me, then no. But if I've done the best job of all, and I lose to someone who has not followed the rules or did a terrible job but won due to politics or because they cheated the system, then... it pisses me off. (I have stories!)

5. Have you ever entered a contest of skill, knowing you were of much higher skill than all the other competitors?

Yes, but that doesn't mean I won. (Although I am currently annihilating my ego-identity, I'll veer off long enough to point out in what might sound like sour grapes but is a view shared by the majority of the entrants that the Toledo Blade Battle of the Bands was a complete joke. It was billed as a contest seeking originality and talent, but it soon became obvious due to flaws in the voting system that the act with the biggest network of computer-using friends had the edge regardless of talent; that a bad cover tune band doing a COVER—ie not an original song—could triumph over a good original act; and that you could be great, but if someone saw you getting ahead, they could destroy your chance of winning with one bad star rating out of spite or idiocy.)

6. Have you ever cheated on something to get a higher score?

Yes, but it wasn't anything "important" like a SAT.

7. What did you do today that you’re proud of?

Let's go with yesterday: I COOKED a healthy meal. I got inspired to do a stir fry (lived off of them and Ramen noodles in the L.A. years), and I went grocery shopping anyway, and I made Kung Pao Chicken. Except I used meatless chicken strips. Chicken, green onions, peanuts, and a half packet of Kung Pao seasoning mix and some instant rice. YUMOLA! I think I'll do another fry tonight but with TOFU! Yes I bought tofu again, first time in eons. First time I came home from the store with absolutely zero meat (unless you count the cat food).

ENVY

1. What item (or person) of your friends would you most want to have for your own?

My very own pickup truck and barn.

2. Who would you want to go on “Trading Spaces” with?

NOBODY! I don't trust anyone with redecorating my space!

3. If you could be anyone else in the world, who would you be?

That's hard to say, because everyone has their tragedies and personal problems and I'm not sure I'd want to trade those... but... someone very wealthy and in great shape. Uhh... but also spiritual... oh, crap. I dunno. Let's be simple. Steve Perry or Stevie Nicks. Great careers. Why not?

4. Have you ever been cheated on?

Yes.

5. Have you ever cheated?

Yes.

6. Have you ever wished you had a physical feature different from your own?

Yes but you'd never believe it if I told you what it was. If I get enough comments asking about it, I'll reveal it but otherwise, it remains a secret.

7. What inborn trait do you see in others that you wish you had for yourself?

Absolute, unwavering faith and perseverance. The ability to make decisions without second-guessing myself into a frenzy. Stick-to-it-iveness. Oh—ORGANIZATIONAL SKILLS! I wish I could be one of those obnoxiously organized habitually punctual fully pulled together people!

Not tagging anyone. If you have the time and inclination, feel free, and leave a comment to that effect so I can read it.

Not Sure of the Name of This Meme

From Knit 'n' NASCAR, because I'm too worn out to really think. I played live today with the new band and I'm beat. Outdoor gig. Temps in the 95 range. Humidity. Thankfully there was a lovely breeze, a tent covering us, and we were in a shady park.

Accent: I'm from NW Ohio. Plus I'm a singer. I sound... like a newscaster. Except I've traveled, and I'm good at mimicking accents, so there are certain words that have crept into my way of speaking that probably give me an "accent" sometimes.

Breakfast or no breakfast: Always breakfast. Not cereal, either. It must be protein or I get the shakes within an hour. Eggs, bacon, hash browns, or some variation with eggs and bacon. Bacon & Egg sandwich. You name it.

Chore I don’t care for: lawn mowing, vacuuming. See, I can handle laundry, dishes, even cleaning the toilets. But those others? Beyond meh.

Dog or Cat: Cats in abundance. And horses. But I do like dogs—good-sized dogs. Not bedroom slipper dogs or yappy little things but biguns.

Essential Electronics: Computer, music gear, answering machine.

Favorite Cologne: Probably still Anais Anais on me. Drakkar on... well just give me the bottle, thank you, and a do not disturb sign.

Gold or Silver: Silver. REAL silver. (Nickel makes me itch.)

Handbag I carry most often: Handbag? Don't carry one. It's the same with wearing skirts—I feel like I'm in drag. My debit card and drivers license go in my back pocket and my money in the front. The keys hang off my belt loop from a carabiner. Huh. Last I checked I was still female but now I'm wondering. Actually, I'm more likely to be found carrying a gig bag (soft guitar case) than anything else. Or a messenger bag (for knitting).

Insomnia: Not so much anymore. Not since I began studying the Law of Attraction, doing affirmations, listening to meditation MP3s and monitoring my brain.

Job Title: MUSICIAN

Kids: They scare me. <--that's what Knit 'n' Nascar wrote and I AGREE!

Living Arrangements: Me, five cats, and way too many guitars in my childhood home in the suburbs. For now.

Most Admirable Trait: Generosity, probably.

Naughtiest Childhood Behavior: If I tell you, I'd have to kill you.

Overnight hospital stays: You mean with me in the bed? When I was five, after having my tonsils removed. Other than that, unintentional stays with my late parents.

Phobias: You can laugh, but... heights and BIG LEAVES. Yes. We're talking philodendron/elephant ear/rhubarb big flappy veiny jungly things. Absolutely terrifying. If you stuck me on a cliff 10,000 feet up and said the only way out was through this clump of elephant ears, I'd jump. No, I do not watch Lost.

Quote: "Men are disturbed not by things that happen, but by their OPINION of things that happen." —Epictetus, Greek Stoic Philosopher, 55-135 AD

Reason to smile: I played my first gig in nine years today and now I remember WHY I was a musician. First real performance onstage singing in nine years (karaoke/impromptu sit-ins don't count); first time I've played bass live onstage in 19 years; and the very first time—the DEBUT—of four of my songs live, with me on acoustic guitar. Big, big day for me—lots of comfort zone thresholds crossed!

Siblings: Well, now, that's complicated. Since I was adopted AND have been found by my biological family, I now know that I have one half-sister on the adopted side (the one with whom I'm debating over the estate); and biologically, there are four full sisters, two full brothers (one died in infancy), one (maybe two) half brother, and one half sister. I think it'd be easier at this point to just be an only child!

Time I wake up: Whenever. (The luxury of unemployment. Hey—wait—I AM employed now. As a working musician. Eh, it's still "whenever".)

Unusual Talent or Skill: I can burp REALLY REALLY well. Uh, I play guitar, bass, and I sing. I can ride bareback. I can dialogue with my horse. I dunno. Is any of that really unusual?

Vegetable I Refuse to Eat: Is it really a surprise that it is lettuce, cabbage, spinach, arugula, er, leaves? Not even shredded as in coleslaw. However, I can totally eat dried oregano and basil from spice jars. Go figure.

Worst Habit: Procrastination and self-doubt.

X-rays: Tons. I'm radioactive. Broken ankle at 16. Numerous chest x-rays because of recurring bronchitis all my life (and I'm a singer, of course); a few falls from horses (pre-Parelli) resulting in questionable injuries; ankles that seem to sprain every 10 minutes. And we won't talk about how many times this one tried to do the cool one-pedal dismount maneuver off her bicycle like all the other kids every summer—not grasping that we were the ONLY family on the block that still had a GRAVEL driveway... yeah. Gravel in the knee. More than once. You'd think I'd have learned. Then all those falls in recent years. My God, I think I built the hospital's radiology wing, come to think of it.

Yummy Stuff: Cheese, chocolate, milk. INDIAN FOOD. OMG INDIAN FOOD. The mouth drools just thinking about clarified buttery sauces and I just ate so that's kinda scary. (Pavlov? Where are you?)

Zoo Animal I Like Most: Lemurs. They're just weird, and I love their ring tails. (You thought I'd say zebras because of the horse thing, didn't ya? Admit it.)

lemurs

Yet Another Meme and Bad, Bad Mail Program

OK, no blog fodder today, so yet another MeMe, this time by way of Sheepish Annie, but before we get into that, to those of you with whom I share off-blog email correspondence, would y'all shoot me a quick note so I have your address again? My Mac Mail program went stupid a week or two ago and absolutely refuses to launch. I've been reading email in my browser (thank you, RoadRunner), meaning my contacts are unavailable. When you comment here, I get the "noreply AT" dealio. I know some of you have commented and I feel rude if I can't reply!

On to the MeMe:
1) What was I doing 10 years ago?

1998... working at an alterations shop while between design jobs. I spent my days hemming pants, altering formal gowns, taking in men's suit coats, and gossiping with the other ladies as we sewed. I actually liked the work; if only it had paid better. I was in a band... that was Before Horses and Before Home Ownership. Wow. That was only 10 years ago? Seems like a lifetime!

2) What are 5 things on my to-do list for today (not in any particular order):
  • clean the litter boxes and try out the new litter options
  • play with my horse
  • clean stalls (like big litter boxes)
  • acquire more job applications
  • fix the major boo-boo on my CPH
3) Snacks I enjoy:

Carrots dipped in bleu cheese dressing. Hey, it gets me to EAT my carrots. Cheese. Chocolate. Spicy popcorn I got at Big Lots once. MILK. OMG I LOVE MILK.

4) Things I would do if I were a billionaire:

Invest, tithe, donate a ton to cancer research, buy a horse farm and a few really nice Paint Horses (to add to my herd), build myself a recording studio onsite, never ever "work" again, travel a lot, eat out as much as possible, hire a live-in cook (for the days I don't eat out), get tan, spend a lot of time at the beach or playing with/riding my horses, do six weeks at the Parelli Center in Ocala every year, buy a kick @$$ pickup truck and a rockin' horse trailer with a weekender package for those expeditions, write a book or two about the Law of Attraction, maybe get a PhD, and be a benefactor to those who aren't billionaires. (I've thought this through, you can see.)

5) Places I have lived:

Ohio for the majority of my life—I've lived in six different homes in two cities in this state; Lansing, MI; Hollywood. That's it.

7) 6 peeps I wanna know more about:

Only six? Heck, I wanna know more about ALL of yaz! So get to it and let me know if you posted so I can go be nosy.

Two In One Day

Another one making the rounds, it's the Gratitude MeMe or Joy Rush. Things I am grateful for:
  • that spring is finally HERE!
  • the smell of lilacs on the breeze
  • the beautiful, enormous flowering white dogwood that has bloomed every season outside my old bedroom window at my parents' house for 45 years. It wasn't supposed to get that big, but nobody bothered to tell IT that. :-)
  • the sunshine peeking between the intermittent storm clouds
  • watching my cat Blue play fetch with the strip of cardboard removed from a box when I zipped it open. He understands the phrases pick it up, bring it, upsies (jump up), find it... one smart cat, that Blue.
  • seeing Big Brown's phenomenal Preakness win yesterday
  • the soft whuffle of my horse's breath on my cheek during a quiet moment
  • the smell of horses
  • the amazement of seeing my horse respond to one of my requests (such as, put your front feet on this pedestal and wait) and watching my horse's expression when he realizes he's "got" it!
  • clean sheets
  • the way the bathroom smells after a long, hot shower
  • the coolness in the midst of a pine forest on a hot summer day
  • the absolute silence on a dark winter's night after a big blizzard
  • the crispness of a first snowfall
  • the first crocus that peeks its head out
  • the first sighting of new buds on the trees
  • baby animals
  • the lazy summer day sounds of faraway lawn mowers and children shrieking with glee
  • chocolate!
  • that I am alive today in this moment

A Day In The Life Meme

Seen this around in several places, thought I'd have a go...

What time do you usually wake up?

Somewhere between 10:30 AM and noon. Ah, the luxury of being liberated from the workforce.

What’s the first thing you do?

Pee. Then have coffee. (Well, you asked.)

Breakfast?

Usually something involving eggs, cheese, hash browns and bacon/facon/fauxage.

Do you go to work/school?

Not at the moment. But soon. Probably be doing both.

Do you like it?

Sure beats dragging myself to a job I hate every day! :-)

If you stay at home, what do you do all day?

Waste time online, read blogs, answer email, watch YouTube vids of horses... read A LOT—finishing Harry Potter series (in Book 7), philosophy, Law of Attraction; knit, clean, write a lot; head to the barn and shovel stalls then play with my horse... hang with the cats and watch TV at night... I'm actually quite busy.

When is lunch and what you eatin’?

Lunch? I have no lunch. I just graze.

Dinner: When and what?

Usually late. Lately it's been VERY late (like 10 PM). Monday is nachos night. Usually I try for a meat/two sides meal. Sometimes it's mac & cheese and a Not Dog (veggie); sometimes a burger, mashed taters and green beans... it varies.

What do you do to unwind?

hang with the cats and watch TV or read

What’s your favorite part of the day?

Oooh. That's a hard one. During the day, I feel pressured to DO stuff. But dark of night sometimes brings on the panics about things I can't fix at 3 AM. So... I dunno. Maybe just after dawn, because the night panics are gone, but I'm not awake and pressured yet. Twilight... means night is coming. But the pressure is over... Hmm.

Who’s your favorite person to interact with?

Honestly? Lately it's been more about interacting with animals than people.

When is bedtime?

Usually sometime after 1 AM. Depends on how ponderous I'm feeling.

Who’s bedtime with?

Me. The cats go to bed elsewhere. Contrary to what they might think, there is not enough room for five territorial cats and me in the same bed.

Why Blog? A Meme

In lieu of anything more interesting, I'll take a page from Lick My Sticks and post this meme. I also refuse to tag it forward, but feel free to participate if you wish.

1. Why did you start your blog?

Because my Mother was dying and I was knitting. Mom was my outlet. She patiently listened to every story I told, every experience I ever had, and shared every success or triumph with me. Despite our differences, we were best friends. During the Year of Bi-Monthly ER Visits (2006), I rediscovered my love for knitting as a way to pass the time (and my panicking mind) while sitting in the hospitals. I stumbled onto knitting blogs while looking for a technique, I think, and blogging appealed to me as I've been a life-long journal keeper.

As Mother's impending death grew nearer, I knew I needed a place to unleash all of the things I had always shared with her. It was a subconscious choice at the time to develop a blog, but it makes sense now. Writing eases the void I've felt since my most devoted "ear" departed, and the upside is that I've made a lot of new friends all over the world.

2. How did you come up with your blog name?

I'm known for my witty banter and for my love of a good pun. Knitty rhymes with witty, so...

3. Do your friends and family know about your blog? What do they think of it?

My Mom knew about it but she didn't understand what it was. I haven't outright told any of my inner circle about it. I'm not sure why. I guess I think I'm anonymous that way. One of these days I might do a big reveal. It's kind of like having a private journal out in public. Why it's OK for "complete strangers" to see those thoughts but not my oldest friends is something I'm still working through.

4. How do you write posts?

Um, I type them?

OK, I'll be serious. I wing it. When something of note happens (like Tyler's sneeze) that just has to be shared, or if I feel the need to vent, or have a revelation, I write. If I have a project to talk about, I write. I just freestyle it. This is me, writing.

5. Have you ever had a troll or had to delete unkind comments?

I've only had a couple of spams. I did have to delete an unkind comment made on the video of me riding the camel on YouTube, though.

6. Do you check your stats? Do you care how many people read your blog? If you do care, how to you increase traffic?

Eh, I've checked them once or twice. Audience membership numbers don't mean much to me. I'm just glad there are readers at all! :-)

7. What kind of blogs/posts interest you?

I love introspection and self-reflection. Humor appeals to me. I like a combination of knitting and life, really. Franklin, Crazy Aunt Purl, Yarn Harlot—they share projects AND they discuss their perspectives on life.

8. What do you like and dislike about blogging?

The immediacy of posting my thoughts and possibly receiving answers to questions. Being able to tap into the minds of thousands of other people at a given moment by searching. The variety of perspectives, projects, feelings, geographical locations, personalities, etcetera that are out there. Feeling connected to a community. That you can get to know someone through their personality and project choices before ever meeting F2F (so you like them for THEM, not for whatever they display). That you can maybe learn to understand people who aren't quite like you but share the same interests. It makes the global community tighter. That's what I like.

What I dislike? Blog software. Clunky sometimes. The feeling that you never know who might be watching from behind the curtain. Wondering if you ever say too much. Knowing it's all being put "out there" and not knowing what might come back to haunt you (makes you more careful about how you word things).

All in all, I Heart Blogging. It's given me a connection to the world that I needed.

HAPPY ST. PATRICK'S DAY!

Phriday is Phor Phil-Ins

Yep, it's definitely Friday. And that means, fluff! From Janet at Friday Fill-Ins comes this (my answers in mauve):

1. I'm looking forward to warmer weather next week.
2. I don't handle confrontation very well.
3. Indian Food is something I could eat every day.
4. Warmth and sunlight bring joy to my heart.
5. Look out, rock radio, here I come!
6. I have one tattoo already and am considering a second.

The Band Meme

(By way of FiberQat via Cindy of Knit For Joy)

You are about to have your own band's CD cover. Follow these directions to the letter. It's fun and requires no thought at all. Go to......

1. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Random The first article title on the page is the name of your band.

2. http://www.quotationspage.com/random.php3 The last four words of the very last quote is the title of your album.

3. http://www.flickr.com/explore/interesting/7days/ The third picture, no matter what it is, will be your album cover. if it will allow you to copy and paste it

Use your graphics program of choice to throw them together, and post a URL to the result as a comment in this post. Also, pass it along on your own blog, because it’s more amusing that way.

50 Random Questions Meme

You know I only resort to memes when I have nothing else to say (which is rare). Feel free to dispense among yourselves...

1. Are you dating the last person you kissed?

I wish. I love him dearly and would date him in a heartbeat, but he's Just A Friend.

2. Pretend you've had 10 beers. What you would be doing right now?
Puking up at least five of them.

3. What do you want?
To be happy, healthy and wealthy. All the time.

4. Who was the last person you shared a bed with?
Man. It's been so long I can't remember. Seriously. We're talking at least eight years.

5. Do you talk to yourself?
All the time. Scarily, I also answer back. Even scarier, sometimes the answers aren't what I expected to hear. (Since I'm aware of this, I feel pretty confident that it's not a split personality, but rather I'm just really in touch with my subconscious mind, enough that it will talk back.)

6. Do you drink milk straight from the carton?
Yep. I live alone. I can do that. I LOVE MILK!

7. Who knows the latest secret about you?
If I tell you, I'll have to kill you.

8. How long is your hair?
Long. Like to my back bra band.

9. Do you like Batman?
Meh.

10. Who was the last person who told you they loved you?
Wendy. No wait, Jason. But it was the preface to soften the "reality check" that was to follow. It wasn't like a mushy heartfelt declaration. It was, "Jeannie, I love you, but you do know that [insert reprimand/reality check about my life here]".

13. Do you like anyone now?
Like as in want to date? Not officially.

14. When was the last time you lied?
Define "lie".

16. Is your birthday on a holiday?
No but close enough that when I was younger I thought the fireworks were an extension of my celebration.

17. What instant messaging service do you use?
I don't, very often.

18.Last thing you cooked today?
My cup of coffee in the microwave. Must remember to eat.

19. Did you have a nap today?
No. I don't nap. I go to bed, sleep eight hours, wake up. Period.

20. Whose house did you go to last?
My old house that I'm fixin' to sell.

21. What do you wear more, jeans or sweats?
Sweats

22. Why is the sky blue?
Because it's sad that it's way up there rather than down here with us.

23. Do you like green beans?
Yes, I love green beans.

24. Do you swear a lot?
Not a lot.

25. Where did you get the shirt you're wearing?
Shirt? Been too long, don't remember. Sweatshirt on top? Gift, I think.

27. Do you use an alarm clock?
Not really. My internal clock is fairly accurate and I've trained myself to tell myself what time to wake up and I'm usually within 10 minutes of it.

28. Where was your default MySpace picture taken?
It's an old band promo shot taken on a fire escape somewhere in my hometown.

29. Do you ever snort when you laugh?
Only if I'm laughing really, really hard.

30. What's the first thing you notice on the opposite sex?
Eyes. Then hair (or lack thereof). Then smile.

31. Is cheating ever okay?
Nope. If you mean "on your partner". If you mean "on your taxes"... *ahem* define cheating.

32. Do you want someone you can't have?
There is NO ONE that I can't have, if I really really really really want them. Granted, some might be more difficult to "acquire" than others, but if I really (to the 100th power) wanted them, I could have them. That said, at this moment, there's nobody currently that close to my radar, no.

34. Do you wear underwear?
When in public, yes.

35. Do you wear a bra?
See above.

36. What size?
Whatever fits.

37. Are you a social or an antisocial person?
Probably more anti-social than social. I like people. Certain people in smaller doses than others. But I do enjoy my solitude.

39. Do you have a tan?
Not this year.

45. Are you afraid of the dark?
Not really.

47. Do you miss someone today?
Every day.

49. Do you still have pictures of you & your exes?
Yep. I'm still actively friends with a few of them.

50. Who's always there for you no matter what?
God. Or my cats. Or all six.
